MassCOSH Mourns Manuel Chuqui and Calls for a Thorough Investigation
MassCOSH extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and coworkers of Manuel Chuqui, who died Thursday after a fall from scaffolding while performing exterior work in Jamaica Plain. NBC10 Boston reported that Manuel’s family identified him, that fire officials said the cause of the fall is under investigation, and that OSHA has been notified.

BOSTON, MA — MassCOSH extends its deepest condolences to thefamily, friends, and coworkers of Manuel Chuqui, who died Thursday after a fallfrom scaffolding while performing exterior work in Jamaica Plain. NBC10 Bostonreported that Manuel’s family identified him, that fire officials said thecause of the fall is under investigation, and that OSHA has been notified.
“Today our hearts are with Christina, Jose, and every personwho was waiting for Manuel to come home,” said Tatiana Sofia Begault, ExecutiveDirector of MassCOSH. “His family remembers a man who worked hard, cared forothers, and lit up a room. We speak his name because he was more than aworkplace fatality. He was deeply loved. His family deserves compassion,practical support, and a full accounting of what happened.”
MassCOSH calls for a prompt and thorough investigation ofthe worksite conditions, scaffold, fall protections, training, supervision, andother relevant circumstances. Those are questions for investigators to answer;no cause or violation has been publicly established. Workers who may haveinformation should be able to share it safely.
“No family should receive a call like this after a loved oneleaves for work,” Begault said. “We will make family support available ifManuel’s loved ones want it. We also ask that investigators follow the evidencewherever it leads and that every employer examine the protections their workersrely on before another family suffers this loss.”
MassCOSH can help Manuel’s family connect, at their request,with Spanish or English language support, grief and community resources,information about the investigation process, and referrals concerning possiblesurvivor benefits. MassCOSH asks the public and media to respect the family’sprivacy and will not speak on the family’s behalf.
