On Tuesday, March 11, the Boston Zero Waste Task Force, including MassCOSH, will hold a briefing to release recommendations to the City of Boston on the best path toward zero waste and good jobs. Though heavily funded with city tax dollars, jobs provided by Boston’s recycling contractor are dangerous, exempt from Boston living wage (paying at or just above minimum wage), and mostly available through temporary agencies. Yet Boston is poised to dramatically expand recycling and other waste reduction strategies – and can do so in a way that benefits the environment and provide good, safe, secure jobs. Boston can follow successful practices established by leading cities, and expand on local innovations as well, to build a unique model that saves millions of dollars, decreases climate and toxic pollution, and creates family-sustaining good, safe job opportunities for Boston’s neighborhoods.
