The Massachusetts Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health (MassCOSH) has a more than 40-year record of advocating for safe, healthy workplaces. MassCOSH’s mission is to ensure that all workers can go to work, earn a fair wage, be treated with respect and dignity, and return home to their families alive and well. MassCOSH is recognized as a national leader in engaging a diverse constituency – youth and adults, immigrants and US-born, unions and environmentalists, legal and health professionals – in uniting around priority health and safety problems and taking action that results in measurable change.
We are seeking a Labor-Community Training Coordinator and Organizer. Working closely with the Director of Policy and Programs and staff, the Labor-Community Training Coordinator and Organizer will:
• Build relationships with unions, worker centers, and other worker or community groups to assist workers in identifying priority health, safety, and environmental concerns; train and develop the knowledge of workers, and assist in their leadership development and organization regarding workplace health and safety issues.
• Conduct health and safety trainings and workshops using a popular education model.
• Provide technical assistance support to MassCOSH programs including the MassCOSH Immigrant Worker Center and Teens Lead @ Work programs.
• Collect, analyze, and report on worker fatalities in Massachusetts as part of MassCOSH’s annual publication of “Dying for Work In Massachusetts: the Loss of Life and Limb in Massachusetts” to bring attention to and change dangerous conditions that kill workers on the job.
• Coordinate an existing committee of health and technical volunteers to bring their expertise to MassCOSH training efforts, programs, and policy campaigns.
• Support MassCOSH policy campaigns to achieve systemic change and safer workplaces in Massachusetts and nationally.
• Represent MassCOSH in Labor/Environment coalitions and convenings focused on worker and community exposures to hazardous conditions including healthy schools, toxics use reduction, zero waste planning, and other worker health and safety issues.
• Maintain our training curricula and research, and write informational reports/fact sheets as needed to support training and policy campaigns.
Qualifications:
• Experience working with organized labor and coalitions and/or community-based partners
• Experience providing training, technical assistance or other support to union members/workers and community partners
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Able to work independently and with a team
• Familiarity with health, safety, environmental and worker rights laws and regulations or a willingness and demonstrated ability to learn
• A passion for occupational safety & health and helping all workers achieve justice on the job;
• Some experience with data collection and analysis
• Ability to speak Spanish
• Bachelor's degree or demonstrated equivalent experience
Additional Qualifications:
• Action-oriented, adaptable, and creative approach to planning.
• Experience with public policy development
• Comfort with technology and social media
• Occupational or environmental health background a plus
Salary: $54,682.20 plus benefits (individual health insurance and dental, 2% contribution toward retirement). MassCOSH staff are members of USW Local 9358.
